Why the Bible Is the Best-Selling Book of All Time?
No one can give an exact figure, but estimates of Bible copies sold and distributed run to five billion or more, far beyond any other book. Several things explain this. Christianity is the world's largest religion, and it encourages believers to read Scripture for themselves. Bible societies, churches, and ministries also give away enormous numbers of copies, so the Bible has been in constant demand for centuries.
The Bible is a library of 66 books written by many authors over well over a thousand years. The Old Testament was written mostly in Hebrew, and the New Testament in Greek during the first century AD. The 27 books of the New Testament were widely recognized by the fourth century. The Bible was later translated into Latin, and Gutenberg's printing press in the 1450s made copies far cheaper, followed by landmark English translations like Tyndale's and the King James Version in 1611.
The pages in the Bible hold law, history, poetry and wisdom (like Psalms and Proverbs), prophecy, the four Gospels on the life of Jesus, the early church in Acts, letters to the first Christians, and the book of Revelation.
The Bible is God's Word for every person, so translation has long been part of the mission. As of October 2026, portions of the Bible have been translated into 4,190 languages, including 1,863 translations of the New Testament, and 812 translations of the entire Bible. It is estimated that a complete Bible in someone's mother tongue now reaches about 80 percent of the world's people.
